The British Soldier's Strength of Character was never tested more intensely than in 1917. Three years' fighting had sapped whatever enthusiasm and optimism had once infused his being, and ground them into the mud. It became abundantly clear to everybody that this war, in which so much was at stake, could be won only by grim determination and a stubborn, gritty resilience. The Battle of Third Ypres (Passchendaele) was recalled by old soldiers as the greatest challenge of their courage. Two offensives that year, Arras and then Messines, had already been fought: the first had promised great success but disappointed, the second had promised success and delivered. At the end of July, British and Empire forces were called upon to attack again, and then the rain fell and went on falling.
