1. The publication of this on the role of religion in the independence movements in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, is timed with the 30-year anniversary of the Singing Revolution, which took place between 1987 and 1991. 2. The manuscript draws on decades of work in state and party archives of the former USSR, many of which are now closed to scholars. The author is a very well-regarded academic who has earned two Fulbrights, a grant from the USSR International Research and Exchanges Board, and a Hoover Institution fellowship all in pursuit of the research for this manuscript. 3. There is a growing interest among scholars and policymakers in the issue of the increasingly political role of religion (as a factor in nationalism, revolution, democratization, and European integration). This issue broadens the appeal of this work beyond its geographical focus.
